Old Durham County

                                                                CARTWRIGHT TOWNSHIP

In area, Cartwright Township was the smallest of the six Durham Townships.  It's northern boundary was very broken as it followed the Scugog River. Some of the area on the north shore of the river was, at one time, part of Cartwright, however, in 1851 it was set apart to become part of the newly formed Victoria County.  Places like Port Hoover, later known as Finger Board, were affected, as well as Scugog Island which was also separated from Cartwright that year.
Blackstock, formerly Williamsburg, was the most important centre in later years, but early on Caesarea took the lead as a port, where lumber and grain from further north crossed over in boats bound for the ports of Bowmanville, Bond Head, and possibly Oshawa, Whitby and Port Hope.  These goods would then be "teamed" down the "Gravel Road", the main north/south route through the township, which came through Blackstock, allowing it its later importance.

Nestleton gained importance when the Canadian Pacific Railway put its northern arm across the township, connecting "cottage country" with the cities in the south.
