Old Durham County

HOPE TOWNSHIP CEMETERIES - AN INVENTORY

This list tells you how to find each cemetery, and what you will find once you arrive.  It does not contain names and dates.  For a transcript of the cemetery's gravestones, please contact the Ontario Genealogical Branch  www.ogs.on.ca and click on BRANCHES and find KAWARTHA BRANCH - there will be links to their postal address, their e-mail address, their list of holdings, their meeting times, etc.   LAKESHORE GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY, c/o Ron Smith, also has transcriptions rfrsmith@eagle.ca

There are 22 cemeteries within the boundaries of Hope Township, including those in Port Hope.  Many of the little 'abandon' cemeteries across the township are kept by cemetery boards.  These boards change periodically, so by the time you see this listing, the contact person may have changed.  Please contact the person shown to find out who now keeps the cemetery book.

Note:  by 'abandon', it is meant that these cemeteries are no longer taking burials and are disused.  Disused does not mean unkept.  All cemeteries across Hope are well maintained as a mark of respect to those whose final resting place is therein.

The background photo is of Providence Cemetery, Concession Road 7 and Hwy 28.

1. Wesleyville
(Methodist)

Location:
Concession 1, Lot 1, at Wesleyville on the Lakeshore Road.

Access:
From Port Hope, drive west from the town along the Lakeshore Road to Wesleyville, about 5 miles.  Cemetery is on the north side of the road beside the now disused church.
Or, from Highway 401, take the Wesleyville Road cutoff, travel south to the Lakeshore Road, turn left (east) to Wesleyville.

What you will find:
There is no parking at this site, however, there is room to pull off onto the shoulder of the road in front of the cemetery and church.  There is an old lane beside the cemetery, but this appears to have been deeded to the property next door, and is likely private property.
The church is no longer in use, but the cemetery is kept neat and the stones are in very good repair.  Stones from very early settlement can be found there.

2. Soper Family
(private family plot)

Location:
Concession 1, Lot 23 - west of Port Britain

There is no longer any sign of the cemetery for the Soper family.  The stones were all removed years ago.  Some were erected in the Soper family plot at Bowmanville Cemetery, and some stones were removed to Michigan where members of the family emigrated early in the 20th century.

To view the stones at Bowmanville, follow either Highway 2 or Highway 401 to Bowmanville.  The cemetery is located on Highway 2, just east of the town on the brow of the hill, south side.
